Resolving HD 100546 disc in the mid-infrared: Small inner disc and asymmetry near the gap
A region of roughly half of the solar system scale around the star HD 100546
is largely cleared of gas and dust, in contrast to the bright outer disc.
However, some material is observed in the immediate vicinity of the star. We
investigate how the dust is distributed within and outside the gap, and
constrain the disc geometry with mid-infrared interferometric observations
using VLTI/MIDI. With baseline lengths of 40m, our long baseline observations
are sensitive to the inner few AU from the star, and we combined them with
observations at shorter, 15m baselines, to probe emission beyond the gap at up
to 20AU from the star. We modelled the mid-infrared emission using radial
temperature profiles. Our model is composed of infinitesimal concentric annuli
emitting as black bodies, and it has distinct inner and outer disc components.
We derived an upper limit of 0.7AU for the radial size of the inner disc, from
our longest baseline data. This small dusty disc is separated from the edge of
the outer disc by a large, roughly 10AU wide gap. Our short baseline data place
a bright ring of emission at 11+-1AU, consistent with prior observations of the
transition region between the gap and the outer disc, known as the disc wall.
The inclination and position angle are constrained by our data to i=53+-8deg
and PA=145+-5deg. Compared to the rim and outer disc geometry this suggests
co-planarity. Brightness asymmetry is evident in both short and long baseline
data, and it is unequivocally discernible from any atmospheric or instrumental
effects. The origin of the asymmetry is consistent with the bright disc wall,
which we find to be 1-2AU wide. The gap is cleared of micron-sized dust, but we

Dust evolution in protoplanetary disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars - The Spitzer view
In this paper we present mid-infrared spectra of a comprehensive set of
Herbig Ae/Be stars observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The
signal-to-noise ratio of these spectra is very high, ranging between about a
hundred and several hundreds. During the analysis of these data we tested the
validity of standard protoplanetary dust models and studied grain growth and
crystal formation. On the basis of the analyzed spectra, the major constituents
of protoplanetary dust around Herbig Ae/Be stars are amorphous silicates with
olivine and pyroxene stoichiometry, crystalline forsterite and enstatite and
silica. No other solid state features, indicating other abundant dust species,
are present in the Spitzer spectra. Deviations of the synthetic spectra from
the observations are most likely related to grain shape effects and
uncertainties in the iron content of the dust grains. Our analysis revealed
that larger grains are more abundant in the disk atmosphere of flatter disks
than in that of flared disks, indicating that grain growth and sedimentation
decrease the disk flaring. We did not find, however, correlations between the
value of crystallinity and any of the investigated system parameters. Our
analysis shows that enstatite is more concentrated toward the warm inner disk
than forsterite, in contrast to predictions of equilibrium condensation models.
None of the three crystal formation mechanisms proposed so far can alone
explain all our findings. It is very likely that all three play at least some

The effects of tannin-containing ground pine bark diet upon nutrient digestion, nitrogen balance, and mineral retention in meat goats
Background
Pine bark is a rich source of phytochemical compounds including tannins, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and fatty acids. These phytochemicals have potential to significantly impact on animal health and animal production. The goal of this work is to measure the effects of tannins in ground pine bark as a partial feed replacement on feed intake, dietary apparent digestibility, nitrogen balance, and mineral retention in meat goats.
Results
Eighteen Kiko cross goats (initial BW = 31.8 ± 1.49 kg) were randomly assigned to three treatment groups (n = 6). Dietary treatments were tested: control (0 % pine bark powder (PB) and 30 % wheat straw (WS)); 15 % PB and 15 % WS, and 30 % PB and 0 % WS. Although dry matter (DM) intake and digestibility were not affected (P > 0.10) by feeding PB, neutral detergent fiber (linear; P = 0.01), acid detergent fiber (linear; P = 0.001) and lignin digestibility (linear; P = 0.01) decreased, and crude protein (CP) digestibility tended to decrease (P = 0.09) as PB increased in the diet, apparent retention of Ca (P = 0.09), P (P = 0.03), Mg (P = 0.01), Mn (P = 0.01), Zn (P = 0.01) and Fe (P = 0.09) also increased linearly. Nitrogen intake and fecal N excretion were not affected (P > 0.05) by addition of PB in the diet, but N balance in the body was quadratically increased (P < 0.01) in the 15 % PB diet compared to other diets. This may be due to more rumen escape protein and less excreted N in the urine with the 15 % PB diet. The study showed that a moderate level of tannin-containing pine bark supplementation could improve gastrointestinal nitrogen balance with the aim of improving animal performance.
Conclusion
These results suggest that tannin-containing PB has negative impact on fiber, lignin, and protein digestibility, but positively impacted on N-balance
A Systematic Analysis of Fe II Emission in Quasars: Evidence for Inflow to the Central Black Hole
Broad Fe II emission is a prominent feature of the optical and ultraviolet
spectra of quasars. We report on a systematical investigation of optical Fe II
emission in a large sample of 4037 z < 0.8 quasars selected from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey. We have developed and tested a detailed line-fitting
technique, taking into account the complex continuum and narrow and broad
emission-line spectrum. Our primary goal is to quantify the velocity broadening
and velocity shift of the Fe II spectrum in order to constrain the location of
the Fe II-emitting region and its relation to the broad-line region. We find
that the majority of quasars show Fe II emission that is redshifted, typically
by ~ 400 km/s but up to 2000 km/s, with respect to the systemic velocity of the
narrow-line region or of the conventional broad-line region as traced by the
Hbeta line. Moreover, the line width of Fe II is significantly narrower than
that of the broad component of Hbeta. We show that the magnitude of the Fe II
redshift correlates inversely with the Eddington ratio, and that there is a
tendency for sources with redshifted Fe II emission to show red asymmetry in
the Hbeta line. These characteristics strongly suggest that Fe II originates
from a location different from, and most likely exterior to, the region that
produces most of Hbeta. The Fe II-emitting zone traces a portion of the
broad-line region of intermediate velocities whose dynamics may be dominated by

Herschel/PACS observations of the 69 band of crystalline olivine around evolved stars
We present 48 Herschel/PACS spectra of evolved stars in the wavelength range
of 67-72 m. This wavelength range covers the 69 m band of crystalline
olivine (). The width and
wavelength position of this band are sensitive to the temperature and
composition of the crystalline olivine. Our sample covers a wide range of
objects: from high mass-loss rate AGB stars (OH/IR stars,
M/yr), through post-AGB stars with and without circumbinary disks, to
planetary nebulae and even a few massive evolved stars. The goal of this study
is to exploit the spectral properties of the 69 m band to determine the
composition and temperature of the crystalline olivine. Since the objects cover
a range of evolutionary phases, we study the physical and chemical properties
in this range of physical environments. We fit the 69 m band and use its
width and position to probe the composition and temperature of the crystalline
olivine. For 27 sources in the sample, we detected the 69 m band of
crystalline olivine (). The
69 m band shows that all the sources produce pure forsterite grains
containing no iron in their lattice structure. The temperature of the
crystalline olivine as indicated by the 69 m band, shows that on average
the temperature of the crystalline olivine is highest in the group of OH/IR
stars and the post-AGB stars with confirmed Keplerian disks. The temperature is
lower for the other post-AGB stars and lowest for the planetary nebulae. A
couple of the detected 69 m bands are broader than those of pure
magnesium-rich crystalline olivine, which we show can be due to a temperature
gradient in the circumstellar environment of these stars. continued...Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
MBM 12: young protoplanetary discs at high galactic latitude
(abridged) We present Spitzer infrared observations to constrain disc and
dust evolution in young T Tauri stars in MBM 12, a star-forming cloud at high
latitude with an age of 2 Myr and a distance of 275 pc. The region contains 12
T Tauri systems, with primary spectral types between K3 and M6; 5 are weak-line
and the rest classical T Tauri stars. We first use MIPS and literature
photometry to compile spectral energy distributions for each of the 12 members
in MBM 12, and derive their IR excesses. The IRS spectra are analysed with the
newly developed two-layer temperature distribution (TLTD) spectral
decomposition method. For the 7 T Tauri stars with a detected IR excess, we
analyse their solid-state features to derive dust properties such as
mass-averaged grain size, composition and crystallinity. We find a spatial
gradient in the forsterite to enstatite range, with more enstatite present in
the warmer regions. The fact that we see a radial dependence of the dust
properties indicates that radial mixing is not very efficient in the discs of
these young T Tauri stars. The SED analysis shows that the discs in MBM 12, in
general, undergo rapid inner disc clearing, while the binary sources have
faster discevolution. The dust grains seem to evolve independently from the
stellar properties, but are mildly related to disc properties such as flaring

Non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid transports in iron-pnictide Ba(FeâââCoâ)âAsâ and the electronic correlation strength in superconductors newly probed by the normal-state Hall angle
Electrical transports in iron-pnictide Ba(Fe1âx Co x )2As2 (BFCA) single crystals are heavily debated in terms of the hidden Fermi-liquid (HFL) and holographic theories. Both HFL and holographic theories provide consistent physic pictures and propose a universal expression of resistivity to describe the crossover of transports from the non-Fermi-liquid (FL) to FL behavior in these so-called \u27strange metal\u27 systems. The deduced spin exchange energy J and model-dependent energy scale W in BFCA are almost the same, or are of the same order of several hundred Kelvin for over-doped BFCA, which is in agreement with the HFL theory. Moreover, a drawn line of W/3.5 for BFCA in the higher-doping region up to the right demonstrates the crossover from non-FL-like behavior to FL-like behavior at high doping, and shows a new phase diagram of BFCA. The electronic correlation strength in superconductors has been newly probed by the normal-state Hall angle, which found that, for the first time, correlation strength can be characterized by the ratios of T c to the Fermi temperature T F, J/T F, and the transverse mass to longitudinal mass
Interstellar polarization and grain alignment: the role of iron and silicon
We compiled the polarimetric data for a sample of lines of sight with known
abundances of Mg, Si, and Fe. We correlated the degree of interstellar
polarization and polarization efficiency (the ratio of to the colour
excess or extinction ) with dust phase abundances. We detect an
anticorrelation between and the dust phase abundance of iron in non
silicate - containing grains ]_\rm d, a correlation
between and the abundance of Si, and no correlation between or
and dust phase abundances. These findings can be explained if mainly
the silicate grains aligned by the radiative mechanism are responsible for the

Habits and Attitudes of Video Gaming and Information Technology Use in People with Schizophrenia: Cross-Sectional Survey
Background: Information technology and video gaming have potential advantages in the treatment of schizophrenia. However, information regarding the habits and attitudes related to internet use and video gaming in people with schizophrenia is limited.Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the habits and attitudes regarding video gaming and information technology usage and their associated factors in people with schizophrenia in Hong Kong.Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, service users with schizophrenia were recruited from 6 halfway hostels and 7 integrated centers for mental wellness in Hong Kong. A 79-item self-report questionnaire was utilized to explore the habits of internet use and video gaming in these people with schizophrenia. The attitude toward video gaming was assessed using the Gaming Attitudes, Motivations, and Experiences Scales. Of the 148 individuals in a convenience sample who were invited to participate in this study, 110 willingly participated (a response rate of 74.3%). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a two-tailed independent t test, Pearson correlation, and principal analysis with 3 methods of rotation (varimax, equimax, and promax).Results: Most participants (100/110, 90.9%) had access to the internet and half of them (54/110, 49.1%) used the internet daily mostly to watch videos (66/110, 60.0%) or read news or books, etc (42/110, 38.2%). One-third of the participants (36/110, 32.7%) used the internet to play web-based games, and most of them (88/110, 80.0%) had played a video game in the past year. The most favorable gaming platforms were cellular phones (43/88, 49%) followed by computers (19/88, 22%) and arcade cabinets (6/88, 7%). The most favorable game genre was action games (34/145, 23.4%). Those who had a bachelor's degree or higher scored lower in social interaction than those with a lower education level (P=.03). Those who played video games daily scored higher in the category of story than those who did not play daily (t(86) =2.03, P=.05). The most popular gaming category was autonomy and the least popular categories were violent catharsis and violent reward. Two motives, "social playing" and "evasive playing," were formed to describe the characteristics of playing video games.Conclusions: Our data showed a high internet utilization rate among people with schizophrenia in Hong Kong. Only a few of them used the internet to search for health-related information. Our study also exemplified the unique habits of gaming among the participants. Health care professionals could utilize video games to engage people with schizophrenia and promote coping with stress and provide social skills training to such people with schizophrenia. Identification of the gaming attitudes can contribute to the development of serious games for the schizophrenic population. Further investigation is vital for the promotion of mental health through web-based platforms.</div
